Pottery: Raku Firing Night- Glaze & Take | October 30th 6pm-9pm (Friday)
Experience the excitement of Raku firing in this three-hour hands-on evening. You’ll glaze your bisque-fired piece, learn about the Raku firing process, and watch as your work is pulled from the kiln glowing hot and transformed through smoke and flame.
Raku is an unpredictable and expressive firing technique, which means every piece comes out with its own unique combination of color, texture, and surface effects. Come ready to experiment, get a little messy, and see what happens.
What You'll Learn
You’ll learn the basics of Raku glazing and firing, including how to apply Raku glazes and how the firing and reduction process affects the final surface of your piece.
During the firing, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the kiln being loaded and fired to temperature before participating in the exciting process of removing pieces from the kiln and placing them into reduction containers. Your instructor will guide you through each step and explain what’s happening throughout the process.
What's Included
- One bisque-fired piece to glaze
- Raku glazes and firing
- All tools and materials needed for the session
- Instructor guidance throughout the firing
What to Expect
Raku firing is an active, hands-on process involving extreme heat, fire, smoke, and unpredictable results. Pieces are removed from the kiln while they are still glowing hot, so you'll be working closely with your instructor and following safety instructions throughout the evening.
Because Raku is intentionally unpredictable, your finished piece may look different from what you expected. That's part of the process and part of what makes Raku so exciting.
Who This Is For
This experience is open to beginners and experienced potters alike. You don't need previous Raku experience, but you should be comfortable working in a studio environment and following detailed safety instructions.
What to Wear
Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. Long pants and natural-fiber clothing are recommended. Raku involves fire, smoke, ash, and hot materials, so please dress accordingly.
Aprons and safety equipment will be provided as needed.
